Premier Danielle Smith has stated the goal is to \u201cprioritize those who are Canadian citizens first\u201d<\/strong> in accessing services. This marker is the direct mechanism required to implement the proposal, as outlined in the Alberta Next Immigration agenda, to \u201cwithhold provincial social programs to any non-citizen or non-permanent-resident.\u201d<\/strong> No new marker is required for existing law; the sole purpose is exclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Outcome is Discrimination<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

By forcing a visible status marker onto the most-used piece of ID, your ministry creates a \u201cmark of distinction.\u201d<\/strong> The absence of the \u2018CAN\u2019 marker facilitates profiling by police, landlords, and service providers, violating the spirit of the Alberta Human Rights Act. This is a clear case of risk-stacking<\/strong> that imports divisive political tactics and causes unnecessary social harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand that the Ministry of Service Alberta immediately withdraw the plan to implement the mandatory \u2018CAN\u2019 citizenship marker.<\/strong> I urge you to focus your ministry\u2019s resources on genuinely streamlining services for all Alberta residents, regardless of their status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
