You don’t need to quit your job or spend a weekend protesting to start building a stronger, more informed community. Begin with simple, consistent actions. First, commit to being informed by reading and learning about one local or provincial issue each week. This means actively seeking out reliable sources; find and follow a Local Expert or high-quality independent voice on platforms like Substack or Bluesky to bypass the noise. Go further by directly supporting media that matters: subscribe to an independent Canadian media outlet like The Narwhal or The Tyee, and consider buying a magazine subscription to Alberta Views (or gift one to a friend!). Use your own platform to shift the conversation: post on social media about an article or issue you’ve learned about, and make sure to make a comment and engage respectfully on a local social media post. Finally, look inward to your network by asking friends and family what resources they use for information—and share yours—and commit to being a support person for a friend who is actively engaged or volunteering.
